Chinese

The Chinese Studies Program offers language courses from elementary through advanced levels and interdisciplinary courses on contemporary Chinese literature, culture and film. All the courses (except Chin 101 and 301) offered by the Chinese Studies Program satisfy both International Perspectives Requirement and Chinese Studies Minor requirement. Other departments offer courses related to Chinese Studies that also satisfy Chinese Studies Minor requirements – Anthropology, Architecture, Geography, History, and Political Science.

Chinese Studies Minor

Minor requires 19 semester credits.

Minors in Chinese Studies are required to take Chin 201-202, and 9 credits at the 300 level; of these at least 3 additional credits are in Chinese (courses taught in Chinese or English) and 3 credits in one of the following: Chin 375, His 337, Pol S 342. The remaining 3 credits are chosen from: Anthro 326; Arch 427; Chin 301, 302, 370, 375, 490; Hist 336, 337; Pol S 342.

3 cr. in Chinese: Chin 301, 302, 370, 375, 490

English Proficiency Requirements
The Department of World Languages & Cultures requires a grade of C - or better in each of English 104 and 105 (105H), and a grade of C or better in any course numbered between 370 and 379 taught by the Department of World Languages & Cultures or the interdepartmental program in Classical studies.

Courses in English Translation
Chinese 370 ( Topics in Chinese Literature, 3 Cr.) is not required, but may be taken to satisfy the department's English proficiency requirement. It may not be used as a substitute for the required courses listed above.
