Study AbroadThe Classical Studies Program encourages Iowa State students to take advantage of the many opportunities to enhance their curriculum by study of the classical world in Greece, Italy, and elsewhere. ISU has two programs with strong Classics components: Classics' own Study Abroad: The Archaeology of Greece program; and Art and Design's program in Italy, Popes and Caesars: 2000 Years of Art History in Rome. Regents ProgramsSome of ISU's Regents Programs offer excellent opportunities to study Classics, Greek, and Latin. We especially recommend the Regents Semester Programs in Ireland (Cork), Wales (Swansea), New Zealand (Otago), and Australia (Newcastle). Make sure to meet with Study Abroad advisor Maureen Deisinger (3224 Memorial Union, www.studyabroad.iastate.edu/ ) and to visit with WLC Advisor Elizabeth Rectanus or program chair Madeleine Henry to discuss transfer credit before you go. We can also coordinate with study-abroad programs in Classics run by other institutions, such as the fall and spring semester programs at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (ICCS), College Year in Athens' (CYA) summer, one-semester or two-semester programs, or the American School of Classical Studies at Athens' (ASCSA) summer sessions. Students of Classics are likewise encouraged to participate in excavation and archaeological research throughout the Mediterranean and other areas inhabited by the Greeks and Romans. Participation in fieldwork is an important component of undergraduate training both in Classical and Aegean Archaeology, as well as Classics. Archaeological fieldwork provides a perspective on the topography and the material culture of the classical world not readily accessible through coursework. For information on current fieldwork opportunities in the Mediterranean contact Professor Margaret Mook (msmook@iastate.edu). |
