Classical Studies is a cross-disciplinary curriculum

in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, encompassing the cultures of Greece and Rome from pre-history to late antiquity. It is one of the most interdisciplinary fields in the humanities, exploring all aspects of the Greco-Roman world through classes featuring the study of language, literature, archaeology, social and political constructs, religion, art, history, and philosophy.

The interdisciplinary major in Classical Studies is ideal for students fascinated with the ancient world, and provides an understanding of how language, politics, history, material culture and art are all inextricably interconnected. The major fosters cultural literacy and offers students a rigorous, traditional undergraduate major in the humanities.

The interdisciplinary major in Classical Studies prepares students for a variety of business and professional schools (Law and Medicine are the two most commonly pursued by Classical Studies majors), and there is now a considerable demand for Latin teachers in many parts of the country. Many students, including science and engineering majors, have double-majored or minored in Classical Studies to broaden their educational experience at ISU. Those who are interested in graduate work in Classics will take a more intense curriculum in the languages. All majors find that knowledge of the ancient languages helps their performance on standardized exams such as the GRE and MCAT.
