阿远初中毕业之后，因为家境不许\,只好放弃学业到台北工作，那年他十五岁，但是他认识阿云已经十四年了。阿云第二年也到台北来做事，那时候，她才知道像他们这样的人在城市所过的日子并不像阿 远回家时所说的那样愉快、好玩，尤其是阿远，他不但要赚钱寄回家、要养活自己，更要凑学费念补校，因为他最大的希望是念大学。他们生活得很苦，但是很积 极，他们彼此开心，也许也有所谓的爱情，但是两人并不自觉，因为从小他们就觉得两人是一体的，何况阿云的妈常说：“阿远，你要好好照顾阿云，不要让她变坏 了，以后，好坏都是你的人”。　　补校高中毕业后，阿远便应征入伍了，他最放心不下的是孤独留在台北的阿云，阿云也离不开他，临走送给阿远的礼物是一千零九十六个写好自己地址、 姓名贴好邮票的信封，“我要你天天写信给我，跟我讲话！”她说；阿远当的是三年兵，其中有一年是润年，二月多一天。 也许阿云太寂寞了，更也许世界在阿远未及察觉的时候已逐渐改变了，就在阿远即将退伍之前，阿云和别人结婚了。阿远心疼极了，但是，时间还是最好的一贴药。 阿远对她从来没有恨意，他一辈子也许都不知道为什么阿云会遗弃他，但是他一辈子也不会去问，他宁愿这么相信：像阿云这样的女孩，嫁的应该是一个比我更好的 人。

DUST IN THE WIND is the story of Wan and Huen, a young couple living in a small mining town in China. Tired of the demands of high school and discontent with the limits of country life, the two quit school against their parents' advice, and move to Taipei. There they join other young friends who've made the move from country to big city, and spend their nights drinking and watching free movies at the nearby theater. But in an overcrowded city where people outnumber available jobs, they find that city life is bleak, especially for people who are young, uneducated, and inexperienced. They work menial jobs for little money: most of which they dutifully send back home to their families. The monotony of their lives is only broken when Wan is drafted into the army--a fateful turn that alters their lives irrevocably.[source]
