Kathy S. Leonard

Professor

Kathy S. Leonard is a professor of Spanish and Hispanic Linguistics. She holds the following degrees: two B.A's, one in Spanish (University of Calif., Riverside) and one in Fine Arts with a specialization in photography (University of Nevada, Reno), an M.A. in Bilingual Education (Santa Clara University), and a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics (University of California, Davis). She also holds teaching credentials for elementary school and community college. Professor Leonard currently serves as the Director of the Latin American Studies Program at Iowa State University. Her research interests include Latin American women's narrative, second language acquisition, and translation studies. Professor Leonard has published numerous translations of Latin American women's narrative and a number of books dealing with the work of women writers. Since 1996 she has worked almost exclusively with Bolivian women authors and has received a number of grants in support of her work. Among them are a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Grant (1998) and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in translation (2003). She is on leave for the 2006-2007 academic year, sponsored by a serial Fulbright Research Grant to Bolivia, where she is working on two books projects dealing with women miners.
