Admission Policy for Elementary Foreign Language
Classes
Students with no previous experience, or up to one-and-a-half years of high school study (1-3 high school units) in a single foreign language may:

take 101 in the same language
Students with two to two-and-a-half years of high school study (4-5 high school units) in a single foreign language cannot take 101. They may:
- Spanish only: take Spanish 97. This course carries NO academic credit and a development fee is charged. Successful completion of this course fulfills the foreign language requirement in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- All languages, including Spanish: take 102 for academic credit. If a student passes 102 (with C- or better) the student will receive 4 retroactive credits for 101. This will fulfill the foreign language requirement in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- All languages, including Spanish take an exam-for-credit to earn college credit for prior language study.
Students with three years or more of high school study (6 or more high school units) in a single foreign language cannot take 101 OR 102. They may:
- take 201. If the student successfully completes 201 and 202, he/she will earn retroactive credit (8 crs.) for 101 and 102.
- take an exam-for-credit to earn college credit for prior language study.
