Webpage Development
Requesting Space
The first thing you need to do to create a page in the ISU public servers is to register your website. The ISU Web Guide has all the information you need.
Uploading Files
AFS (recommended method)
- Log on to any LSRC or 3113 computer using your ISU NetID and password.
- Click START and select My Computer
- Double-click on the AFS drive (usually the last option at the bottom)
- The folder WWW contains your ISU page.
Filezilla (for Windows)
- Log on to any LSRC or 3113 computer using your ISU NetID and password.
- Get a Kerberos ticket (double-click the key icon on the Windows task bar)
- Open Filezilla
- In Filezilla, click EDIT and select Settings
- Click on GSS Support. If you see a list of addresses like isua1.iastatee.edu, skip this step. Otherwise, enter isua1.iastate.edu and click ADD. Click OK to close this box.
- In the Filezilla window, type the server address ( isua1.iastate.edu), your ISU NetID and your password and clidk "Quick Connect."
Using Kompozer
Kompozer (previously known as Nvu) is open source software available at all LSRC stations and in all 3113 Pearson (Smart Classroom) stations.
Quick-Start Guide
- Start program from Program Folder.
- Choose ‘Edit sites’ in the Nvu Site Manager panel on the left-hand side of the window. Fill in ‘Site Name’ and click the ‘Select directory’ button under the Publishing Server heading. Choose a local folder and then press ‘OK’. Press ‘OK’ once more to create your site.
Tip: If possible, try to save to a folder in the My Documents folder, because it will then be reasonably private (other users won’t be able to see it).
- When you are done making your page and need to publish it to your ISU webspace, go to My Computer and locate your student web space, which should be mounted as a drive on the machine.
- If you have registered your page, there will be a "WWW" folder on this drive. If it isn’t there, you will have to register your page first (see instruction at the top of this page).
- Assuming the "WWW" folder is there, you need to copy your page from the hard drive folder to this folder.
Please Note : Save your starting page as "homepage.html." This is the page that will display first when people open your ISU page.
Do not hesitate to contact the LSRC staff if you have questions.
