Foreign Language Learning Resource Center

The Foreign Language Learning Resource Center (FLLRC) is currently temporarily located in the basement of Pearson Hall, room 015 and will have limited services during Fall semester, 2005.  The new and greatly expanded FLLRC will reopen in 312 Pearson Hall for spring semester, 2006. This a primary resource for students enrolled in foreign language classes who seek access to audio, video, textual, and electronic materials in support of their study. The lab also serves as the instructional technology hub of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, providing specialized media, computer carts, and
technological staff support for language and culture classes throughout Pearson Hall.

Our ability to deliver the most up-to-date level of instruction has received a fantastic boost with the addition of the new Cargill Foreign Languages Digitally Enhanced Classroom (FLDEC) in 303 Pearson.

Please also visit the Computer-Assisted Language Learning Club, which meets twice a month on topics related to language teaching and technology.

FLLRC User Guidelines

Quiet Study:

A large number of students use the FLLRC for quiet study, and this is encouraged. Students may work together in groups, but please be respectful of the group study environment. Disruptive patrons will be
asked to leave.

Reservations:

Faculty may reserve equipment via the web-based reservation system at http://fldec.lang.iastate.edu/flalcart. Questions and phone reservations for equipment and media may be directed to 294-9761.

Computers:

We currently have 15-functional Pentium PC workstations for the primary use of students enrolled in foreign languages and literatures courses. Most of our general use computers run Windows NT 4, although a couple
run Windows 98. The workstation to the left of station #1 (station #0) and station #06, run Windows 95/98, and are primarily intended for faculty and staff use. E-Mail through telnet is available on workstations #21 and #22, and this is the primary intended use of those units. Students must show valid ISU Student ID to use FLLRC computers and to access other resources.

Please note: At various parts of the semester certain computers may be set aside for group testing. Faculty and FLL staff may use workstations #s 0 and #6. These units may be reserved by calling 294-9761 during
regular hours. Station #0 is primarily intended for the preparation of instructional materials, including the creation of digital video from VHS or camcorder original; and station #6 for the digitizing of slides.

Printing:

Faculty, students, and staff may print from our laser printer for 5 cents per page. This fee is in part a charge to offset our printing cost, and in part to reduce paper usage. Cash only please.

Scanning:

Slide scanning may be done by faculty, staff, and students after training on the unit. Faculty and their student assistants have priority on the use of this machine. We have a photo scanner located behind the front desk. Please ask the staff for assistance if you require something scanned in this manner.

Purchase of materials:

Audio and video tapes for many of our current courses can be purchased from the lab. Please inquire at the front desk for a list of tapes in stock and prices. Checks made out to Iowa State University are preferred to cash. Items not in stock can usually be made to order in 2-3 days.

We are located at Pearson Hall.
Phone: (515)-294-9761
Faculty may make reservation requests through RESERVATION link, for materials to be used in class. Students may use materials in the lab.
